ToggleThe City That Reinvented Itself
Medellín is not simply a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. It is a city of transformation.
Set in the Aburrá Valley, Medellín combines dramatic landscapes, innovative public transportation, contemporary art, neighborhood culture and one of Colombia’s most recognizable regional identities: the Paisa way of life.
For a first-time visitor with only one day, the challenge isn’t finding things to do.
It’s choosing what actually helps you understand the city.
This private Medellín day experience brings together urban transformation, local culture, art, panoramic views and authentic Paisa flavors — without trying to turn the day into a race from one attraction to another.
The idea is simple:
Don’t just visit Medellín. Understand why Medellín is different.

🌅 MORNING: SEE MEDELLÍN FROM ABOVE
🚡 START WITH THE METROCABLE
One of the best ways to understand Medellín is to look at it from above.
The city’s integrated Metro and Metrocable system isn’t simply transportation. It has become part of Medellín’s identity and offers visitors a completely different perspective of the Aburrá Valley. The Metro itself describes the system as a way to experience the contrasts of the valley and get closer to the city’s culture.
As the cable car rises above the city, the urban landscape changes beneath you.
Houses climb the hillsides.
The valley opens below.
The mountains surround the city.
And suddenly, Medellín’s geography makes sense.
🌄 More Than a View
The Metrocable also tells part of Medellín’s transformation story.
Infrastructure, mobility and access to different parts of the city have played an important role in changing how Medellín connects its communities.
Depending on the route and your interests, we can design the experience around one of the city’s cable-car systems.
The Santo Domingo line, for example, connects Acevedo with Santo Domingo and provides views across the northeastern hillsides.
For travelers interested in nature, the route can also be extended toward Parque Arví using the tourist Line L, which travels from Santo Domingo toward the forested park area.
For a one-day city experience, however, we recommend keeping the focus on Medellín itself rather than trying to fit too much into one day.
🏙️ MID-MORNING: DISCOVER MEDELLÍN AT STREET LEVEL
📍 PLAZA BOTERO
After experiencing the city from above, we return to street level and head toward the heart of downtown Medellín.
Here, art becomes impossible to miss.
Plaza Botero is home to monumental sculptures by one of Colombia’s most internationally recognized artists: Fernando Botero.
The sculptures are not simply something to photograph.
They are an introduction to one of the most distinctive artistic styles to emerge from Colombia.
Rounded forms.
Monumental figures.
Playfulness.
Character.
And a very particular way of seeing the human body and everyday life.
The plaza itself has become one of Medellín’s most recognizable public spaces.
🎨 MUSEO DE ANTIOQUIA
Just beside Plaza Botero, we continue into the Museo de Antioquia.
This is where the story becomes deeper.
The museum houses collections and exhibitions connected to Colombian art, history and culture, including important works associated with Fernando Botero.
Why Include It?
Because Medellín shouldn’t be reduced to beautiful viewpoints, restaurants and nightlife.
Its cultural identity matters.
Inside the museum, travelers can discover different chapters of Colombia’s artistic and social history.
And if you’re interested in Botero, this becomes an especially meaningful stop.
The museum currently lists its regular opening hours as Monday through Saturday from 9:40 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sundays and holidays from 9:40 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; schedules should always be reconfirmed when planning the actual trip.
🌮 LUNCH: TASTE THE PAISA REGION
🍽️ THIS IS WHERE THE DAY GETS LOCAL
After exploring the city center, it’s time to sit down and experience Medellín through its food.
Because if Bogotá introduces you to Colombia through ajiaco and Andean history, Medellín has another personality entirely.
The food of Antioquia is hearty, generous and deeply connected to local traditions.
Depending on your preferences, lunch can include opportunities to try:
- 🍛 Bandeja paisa
- 🌽 Arepas
- 🫘 Beans
- 🥑 Avocado
- 🍌 Plantain
- 🥩 Traditional Antioquian dishes
- ☕ Colombian coffee
But we don’t want this to feel like:
“Here is the famous dish. Take a picture. Next stop.”
Instead:
Sit down. Eat. Talk. Enjoy Medellín.
Food is part of understanding a place.
🌆 AFTERNOON: THE MEDELLÍN THAT CHANGED ITS STORY
🎨 COMUNA 13
Now we move into one of the most internationally recognized examples of Medellín’s transformation:
Comuna 13.
This neighborhood has become famous for its colorful street art, outdoor escalators, music, dance, local businesses and community-led cultural experiences.
But there is something important to understand.
Comuna 13 should not be presented simply as a “dangerous neighborhood that became safe.”
That story is too simplistic.
Its history includes violence, displacement, community resistance, urban transformation and the efforts of local residents to create new opportunities.
Today, visitors can experience a neighborhood where art and entrepreneurship have become important parts of the local identity.
🎶 Street Art, Music & Stories
Walk through the streets.
Listen to the music.
Look at the murals.
Meet local artists when possible.
Discover the stories behind the neighborhood.
And most importantly:
Listen.
Because the strongest part of a Comuna 13 experience isn’t taking a photograph of the escalators.
It’s understanding the people who live there.
🤝 TRAVEL WITH LOCAL CONNECTIONS
This is where our philosophy at Sustainable Tourism Colombia becomes especially important.
We don’t want visitors to arrive in a community simply as spectators.
We want travel to create opportunities for meaningful local interaction.
That could mean:
🎨 Supporting local artists
☕ Buying from local businesses
🛍️ Choosing locally made products
🎶 Learning from community guides
📖 Hearing stories directly from residents
The objective isn’t to “consume” a neighborhood.
It is to experience it respectfully.

☕ LATE AFTERNOON: COFFEE WITH A PAISA VIEW
After the energy of Comuna 13, we slow things down.
Because one of the biggest mistakes in a one-day itinerary is trying to squeeze every possible attraction into twelve hours.
Instead, we make space for a final Colombian ritual:
Coffee.
- Find a good café.
- Sit down.
- Look at the city.
- Have a conversation.
- Maybe try a specialty Colombian coffee.
- Maybe simply enjoy an espresso while watching Medellín move around you.
☕ A Different Kind of Luxury
Luxury isn’t always a five-star hotel.
Sometimes luxury is having enough time to enjoy where you are.
And that’s exactly what we want this experience to feel like.
🌇 END THE DAY: MEDELLÍN AT YOUR OWN PACE
Depending on your interests and schedule, the final part of the day can be customized.
You may prefer:

🍽️ A Gastronomic Experience
Continue into Medellín’s restaurant scene.
🎶 Local Nightlife
If you’re looking for something more energetic, the experience can continue into the evening.
🛏️ Return to Your Hotel
Or simply return to your hotel after a full day of discovery.
There is no single correct way to finish your Medellín experience.
That’s the point.
